The Carrboro Elementary School Park Project is currently a group of committed parents associated with the Carrboro Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) whose focus is to lead a comprehensive and collaborative renovation project of the school grounds.

Volunteer Opportunities with Carrboro Recreation & Parks

During the course of a year, the Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department utilizes many volunteers that are willing to "lend a helping hand" to the Carrboro community.

Below are general descriptions of the various volunteer positions that may be available at times during the year.

Table of Contents:
Recreation & Parks Commission

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
This eleven-member commission is appointed by the Board of Aldermen and serves in an advisory capacity to the Board regarding Recreation and Parks issues. Monthly meetings held on the first Monday evening of every month. Must cmplete Advisory Board Application and apply through the Town clerks office. Appointment made by the Board of Alderman. Three-year term. Commission members also frequently volunteer to Departmental major events especially Halloween and 4th of July and are invited to represent the commission for other event support. (Judges, Ribbon Cutters, Etc)
Commission members may also volunteer for additional appointments to County work groups and committees when new committees or openings arise.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Interest in recreation and parks issues. Seven members must be residents of Carrboro. Two members shall be residents of Orange County, outside the town limits. Additional members on the commission include one school representati
Monthly meeting held on the first Monday of the month. Three-year term appointment. Occasional subcommittee meetings set at mutually determined times. Occasional special event assistance also required.

Youth Sports Coaches

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Coach works directly with children in the following age groupings (6-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15), teaching the sport.

Reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor or assigned staff.

Person communicates effectively with players, parents and departmental staff. Assists in distributing program information from the department to each individual participant. Organizes and teaches the correct and proper playing skills and fundamentals during practice and applies them in games. Provides a safe environment at practice as well as an enjoyable atmosphere at games. Attends all team functions including pre-season meetings, clinics, and seminars. Makes decisions in the best interest of the team and places more emphasis on the emotional and physical wellbeing of the players over wins and losses.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidate has had previous experience either as a player and / or a coach in the sport. Must have knowledge of the rules and the fundamentals of the game. He/she must also enjoy working with children.

REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteer should have their own transportation to head to and from team activities. Should also be accessible via phone (with answering machine). Access to Internet email is preferred. Be willing and able to complete the season from program start to completion of the playing season.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteer coaches devote 1 hour of practice time once a week (Monday-Thursday evenings) and one hour on Saturday (during the day). Games are played Monday-Friday in the evenings and Saturday (during the day). Once games begin, practices continue between games. During season, teams usually have one or two games and one practice per week). Maximum time spent with the team is between 3-5 hours a week during the period of Mid-October to Late February.

Special Events Assistant

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Opportunities may exist in Athletics, General Programs or Facility Divisions of the Recreation and Parks Department.

Volunteer may work with participants of all ages.

Reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor or assigned staff.

Volunteer will aid full-time and part-time staff members in conducting special events over short periods of time (usually 1-5 days). Person may work directly with participants to help run events such as game activities, craft or activity stations, tournaments, sport-skill drills/games, etc. Person aids in set-up/breakdown of facilities and equipment with some lifting involved for certain events.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidate has had some previous experience working with recreation activities. Must be willing to work with others to ensure events run smoothly

REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteer should have their own transportation to and from special event activities. Should also be accessible via phone (preferably with answering machine) and electronic mail. Youth Camp Volunteer

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Should be enthusiastic about kids of age group that will be working with. Should be of a different age than the kids that are working with. Will report to Camp Supervisor. Participates in all camp activities as to encourage kids to do the same. Assists camp staff in preparing for and in carrying out activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with youth is preferred but not required. Should enjoy kids of age range of assigned group and have some interest related to camp activities to share. Should be comfortable in environment that will be working in (indoor, outdoor, or both).

REQUIREMENTS:
Should arrange own transportation to/from the facility. Should be willing to commit to date or dates scheduled and give as much advance notice as possible if cannot participate.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

3 to 5 hours for 1 or more days a week as mutually agreed for programs need.

Guest Speakers

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Presents to audience of targeted age on agreed topic.
Arranged by assigned Recreation Supervisor.
Person communicates effectively with participants. Clearly understands that during each presentation they represent the Town and their demeanor and subject matter should reflect that. Communicates with departmental staff on logistic details. Organizes and plans presentation and provides props as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and knowledge varies based on audience and is determined on a case-by-case basis by program supervisor. Should enjoy presenting and have some knowledge of presentation fundamentals for targeted audience.

REQUIREMENTS:
Presenter should have own transportation to/from the facility. Should be willing to commit to date scheduled and give as much advance notice as possible if cancellation necessary.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:
Varies from 1 to 3 hours as mutually agreed for program need.>

Special Interest Groups

The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is fortunate to have some groups that contribute their time and effort toward specific issues and projects within our community.

These active special interest groups are:

  • Carrboro Parks Project
  • Carrboro Elementary Park Project

The Carrboro Parks Project -nonprofit group is currently fundraising for a tennis backboard at Wilson Park. This project is a community driven effort, with support of the Board of Aldermen. Previous projects wee the fence at the dog park at Anderson and the shade sail for the playground at Town Commons If you would like to become involved in this or other parks and recreation projects, contact Carrboro Parks Project or visit their web site at Carrboroparks.org.
