Mayor Lydia Lavelle, born in Athens, Ohio, has a bachelor’s degree from St. Andrews (formerly College) University, a master’s degree in parks and recreation administration from North Carolina State University, and a law degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, where she currently works as an associate law professor. After being elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen in 2007 and 2011, she was first elected as mayor in November of 2013. Now in her third term, Mayor Lavelle is a member of the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition and a member of the Orange County Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. Mayor Lavelle and her wife Alicia Stemper have two adult children.
