Search for Poet Laureate, Town of Carrboro

The Arts Committee of the Town of Carrboro seeks applications and nominations for the position of Poet Laureate of Carrboro, for a term that will begin August 1, 2013 and expire July 1, 2015. The main duty of the Poet Laureate is to engage in activities that enhance the presence of poetry in the social and civic life of Carrboro. These may include participation in Carrboro Day, contributing to the planning of the West End Poetry Festival, which is held annually in October, and outreach to local schools. The Laureate should be a practicing poet; a record of publication and public readings will be considered assets but are not required. The Poet Laureate may serve more than one 2-year term of office, but not two terms in succession. Residency in Carrboro is desirable but not necessary.

If you wish to apply, please submit a cover letter that addresses your qualifications for the position and 3-5 poems (no more than 5 pages of poetry). If you have published one or more poems, please include in your cover letter titles with the name and date of the revue or Web site; please also list your public readings. Also please provide a statement of 250-350 words on your vision of the role of poetry in Carrboro, with suggestions for activities in which you would engage. All application materials must be received by July 31, 2013.

If you wish to nominate someone, please provide with the name a justification of 150-200 words.

Please address all application materials in hard copy to:
