Dave
Otto
has lived near Bolin Creek in Chapel Hill and Carrboro
for 35 years. He retired last March after a career in
environmental health research, in part, to pursue his
passion for nature photography. For the past five years
he has been working with the Friends of Bolin Creek,
a grassroots citizen's group devoted to preserving the
Bolin Creek corridor and adjacent woodlands. He uses
digital photography as a tool to communicate the beauty
and importance-ecological, recreational and historical-of
this place in efforts to educate the public and convince
local governments to preserve this natural treasure.

"North
American Landscapes in Pastel "
Dan
Vaughan has always had a love and appreciation for
art. His retirement in 2003 from the University of
North Carolina allowed him the opportunity to devote
time to painting for the first time. In 2006 he was
an artist-in-residence for 11 weeks in the Badland's
National Park in South Dakota. Removed from his usual
routine, he had time to get totally immersed in his
new found passion. In his pastel landscapes he paints
a wide variety of beautiful vistas in North America,
sometimes incorporating wildlife in their natural
habitat. The coast of the Carolinas and Big Sur, as
well as the mountainous terrains of Utah, Colorado,
Alberta, and British Columbia have all provided inspiration.
He has enjoyed plein air painting local scenes in
Orange, Chatham, Durham, and Alamance counties as
well.
