Mayor Lavelle presents Proclamation to Cordelia Heaney with the Compass Center For Women and Families.

“DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH”

Mayor Lavelle presented Cordelia Heaney with the Compass Center For Women and Families with a proclamation proclaiming October 2018 as “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH” in the Town of Carrboro. We would like to encourage residents to show support for victims and survivors of domestic violence, and to send the message that we are a community working together to end this violence. Read the proclamation in it's entirety below.



“DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH”
 
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a pattern of coercion and control in an intimate partner relationship where one person uses violence to gain power and control over their partner; and
 
WHEREAS, domestic violence includes not only physical, but also mental abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, isolation and sexual abuse; and
 
WHEREAS, domestic violence happens in every community and affects people of all genders and ages; and
 
WHEREAS, the impacts of domestic violence affect individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole; and
 
WHEREAS, The Compass Center for Women and Families offers a wide variety of helpful programs and resources to victims and their families; and
 
WHEREAS, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), there will be a month of events including the Passion for Purple cocktail party presented by Ellis Family Law at the NC Botanical Gardens on October 18; and
 
WHEREAS, everyone is encouraged to attend the many DVAM events on the community calendar listed at compassctr.org; and
 
WHEREAS, this month, we recommit to standing with survivors of domestic violence, and to doing our utmost to extend hope and healing to all who need it.
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Lydia E. Lavelle, Mayor of the Town of Carrboro, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 2018 as “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH” in the Town of Carrboro and encourage residents to show support for victims and survivors of domestic violence, and to send the message that we are a community working together to end this violence.
