Board of Aldermen Meeting Summary
The Carrboro Board of Aldermen met on Tuesday,October 17, 2017. Following is a brief summary of noteworthy actions. It does not include all actions taken at the meeting and should not be viewed as official minutes. Gary Phillips, the Town of Carrboro Poet Laureate, provided information about the upcoming West End Poetry Festival. It will take place October 18th-21st.
Proclamation: Domestic Violence Month
Mayor Lavelle proclaimed the month of October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in the Town of Carrboro and presented the proclamation to representatives of the Compass Center.
Affordable Housing Advisory Commission Charge Issued
The Town Clerk issued a charge to Tyran Hill, a recent appointee to the Affordable Housing Advisory Commission. Tyran Hill was appointed to the subject matter expert seat on the Commission.
Body Worn Camera Grant Approval
The Board of Aldermen approved the receipt of a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for the amount of $46,371 to offset the purchase cost of body worn cameras for the Police Department.
Public Hearing Set for January 23, 2018 for Amendments Related to Tree Canopy and Replacement Standards
The Board of Aldermen set a public hearing and referred the item to Planning Board, Appearance Commission, Environmental Advisory Board, and Orange County. Draft Solid Waste Report
The Board of Aldermen received a report Kessler Consulting on the summary of the final solid waste study.
Update on Traffic Calming for Tallyho Trail
Staff presented the update information and the Board heard from neighbors on their requests for traffic calming. Next steps will include installation of speed tables and further conversation regarding trimming of vegetation in dangerous areas.
Lake Hogan Farms Road Extension – Discussion
Staff briefed the Board on the history of the road extension. The Board requested further information from Orange County on where they are on finalizing the Twin Creeks Park.
Approval of a Development Agreement with Orange County Regarding the South Greensboro Street Property and the Associated Orange County Southern Branch Library
The Board of Aldermen approved the development agreement unanimously. Orange County Board of Commissioners had also previously approved of the development agreement. These efforts culminate the work begun on December 6, 2016 when the boards authorized their respective managers to sign letters of intent related to exploring development options at this location. These actions followed from ongoing work on the exploration of this joint development opportunity. A possible ribbon cutting in spring 2019 is projected.
