    Mellodrama (2008)

    Music Documentary Dianna Dilworth
Plus, The World Premiere of Melting of the Globe (2009) Music Documentary Short

"Mellodrama" explores the rising and falling fortunes of the Mellotron-the first musical keyboard to sample the sounds of other instruments from its birth in a California garage in the 1950s, through its dominance on concert stages in the 1970s, through its almost religious cult of followers in the 2000s.

Through the music of the Beatles, the Zombies, and the Moody Blues, the Mellotron became the "instant magic sound."

"Melting of the Globe" follows Orange County musician Jay Manley and Fretted instrument maker Wes Lambe as they design and build a new 21 string guitar that features the best of an electric guitar and a sitar. Jay discusses how his environment inspired this instrument.

    The Phantom of the Opera

Silent Classic with Erich Lieth at the Grand Piano improvising an original score.

A grotesquely disfigured composer known as the "Phantom" (Lon Chaney) haunts Paris' opera house, where he's secretly grooming Christine Daae (Mary Philbin) to be an opera diva. Luring her to his underground lair, the Phantom declares his love. But Christine loves Raoul de Chagny and plans to elope with him after her next performance. When the Phantom finds out, he abducts Christine, incurring the wrath of Raoul -- and a horde of rabid Parisians.

    Persepolis

A fascinating and wholly unexpected take on Iran's Islamic revolution beginning in the 1970s, Persepolis is an enthralling, animated feature about a spirited young woman who spends her life trying to deal with the consequences of her nation's history. An unique window onto a crucial chapter of 20th century history, Persepolis is graphically engaging with its black-and-white, bold lines and feeling of repressed energy, fit to burst. The emotional content is so strong that after awhile, one almost forgets the film is a cartoon. Satrapi co-wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film along with animator Vincent Paronnaud

    COMMUNITY BOOK FORUM
    The Soloist
    by Steve Lopez

This event is part of Orange County's Partnership to End Homelessness community read of The Soloist which was released as a movie starring Jaime Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr. over the summer. It is the true story of a homeless man who once was a student at Julliard but could not stand the pressures of being one of a few African-American students and also battling schizophrenia. He dropped out and took to playing his violin on the street where an LA Times reporter discovered him and fought to get him back on track. A panel of experts in the areas of mental health and homelessness will lead the discussion. We welcome all members of our community, including the homeless, to attend the discussion and share your thoughts, questions, and insights on this story and ways to end homelessness in our community. More information and an online discussion can be found at www.ocpehdiscussions.blogspot.com.

    GET INVOLVED
Much of the vitality of life in Carrboro is due to the active involvement of citizens in the community. Volunteers of all ages regularly share their talents, skills, and ideas by planning or assisting with large events, serving on town advisory boards, or coaching a youth sports team. While some activities require the contribution of many hours others call for only a few hours of time. Not only can you share your talents, you can have fun, make new friends and discover more about your town.
