led by expert panelists.
This February, we will be celebrating Black History
Month by exploring the remarkable contributions of North
Carolinians to the beginnings of African-American literature.
The editor of the anthology, UNC-Chapel Hill Distinguished

lead the discussion. Copies of the book can be borrowed
from the Cybrary.

| BRIAN
AND MARY LEWIS |
|
Brian & Mary Lewis play popular country music from
the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, and their performance features
acoustic guitars, mandolin, and songs sung in close
harmony. One of the most popular aspects of their show
is their presentation of stories and anecdotes about
the writers and original performers of the songs. Playing
together since just after their marriage in 1980, they
have performed extensively throughout 11 states, and
have released a CD, Ages and Ages Ago. A typical performance
includes "brother duets" from the 1930s and
'40s, honky tonk music from the '40s and '50s, as well
as old-time and bluegrass numbers.

| THE
MIGHTY GOSPEL INSPIRATIONS |
|
The group includes founding members, brothers Mike
and Kenneth Sanders who have been singing together for
over 40 years. The current members also include Ms.
Rome Hemingway, James Bailey and Robert Waldrop. Currently
The Mighty Gospel Inspirations are focused on singing
traditional Jubilee style acappella gospel rarely heard
today. It is reminiscent of what was performed in the1940's
and 1950's and very powerful. This is an intricate singing
style that requires tightly-knit harmony and results
in a sound very much like a single voice accompanying
a lead singer. Many long hours of rehearsal are required
to make it successful and The Mighty Gospel Inspirations
have dedicated themselves to this task. Have a listen,
you will not be disappointed.

this audacious biography of newspaper baron Charles

from poverty to become one of America's most influential
men. A complex and technically stunning film, Citizen
Kane is considered one of the best movies ever made.
