    CARRBORO JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

The Carrboro 4th of July Celebration will be ROCK'IN! Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten nationwide.
Named 'A Titan of the Telecaster' by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, and in the Western swing of Texas and California honky tonks. An apt description of Bill's singing, songwriting and guitar playing skill is provided in this quote from Nick Lowe: "He's like a devastating culmination of the elegant and funky... a really sensational musician, with enormous depth." Enjoy Face Painting, Balloon Sculpture Artists, Roaming Magicians, lots of games, food, and activities for everyone to enjoy!
Pre-Event starts at 9:30am at Weaver Street Market! Don't miss out on the fun! Visit Carrboro July 4th Celebration for more details and a schedule of events.

AMERICAN SUMMER : Heros or Scoundrels?
The AMERICAN SUMMER Documentary Film Festival began in 2004 and because 2008 will once again get us focused on elections, we will start off with films that ask about our politicians: Are They Heroes or Scoundrels?
On June 28 we will watch a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, now the powerful Governor of California, in PUMPING IRON and we will learn from this ambitious, good looking, young immigrant how he focused his mind and built up his body. We will see how he became a winner, and was acknowledged as the world's champion muscle man for five years in a row. We will also watch outtakes and new footage in which Arnold admits taking steroids and other "supplements" and confesses to telling lies so the film would be more dramatic and bring in enough money for him to buy a new car. Does his behavior in this film change your opinion of him or change inspiration that you felt watching his climb to power?

Charleen Swansea, Curator for AMERICAN SUMMER Films made a list of movies that we might choose to see on July 26 and August 23. In June you will be able to vote for your preferences from this list:

Hearst Castle, Building the Dream (+Orson Welles in Citizen Cane)
This film will captivate audiences with Europe's spectacular architectural wonders, the foundation for the dream that became Hearst Castle.
    Charles Kuralt, On the Road
Go on the road with one of the most distinctive and recognizable newsmen of the century, and hear from his colleagues and friends.
Andy Discovers America, The History Lesson
Opie has had it with his history homework, and misinterprets Andy's empathy as an excuse to skip it and lead his friends in revolt against their teacher, "Old Lady" Crump.
    An Unlikely Friendship
This film is about a surprising friendship which emerged between an embittered Ku Klux Klan leader and an outspoken black woman activist in Durham, NC.
    Cowboys of the Saturday Matinees
This funny documentary concerns the legion of B-westerns made from the end of the silent era to the present, including stock footage of all the classic cinema cowboys. It features 40's & 50's footage.
    Congress by Ken Burns
In this elegant, penetrating and moving portrait of the United States Congress, filmmaker Ken Burns profiles an American institution whose ideals and actions affect us all.
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
Corporate audio and videotapes tell the inside story of the scandal involving one company's manipulation of California's energy supply and how its executives wrung a billion dollars out of the resulting crisis.
    Edison, Wizard of Light
Escaping from the orphanage, young Jack Maloney darts into the lab of great inventor Thomas Edison. Jack becomes Edison's apprentice and, through ups and downs, they create the first motion pictures.
    Feed
Taken from satellite feeds, it contains candid, off the air, shots of the candidates and gives a little insight into the election process. Watch George Bush, Hillary Clinton, & Jerry Brown goof up on 1992 TV.
    Founding Fathers
Our "Founding Fathers" were, in fact, human beings. Gain a fascinating glimpse behind the images on the marble busts and faces on our dollar bills and pocket change.
    Howard Hughes, The Real Aviator
A look at the secret life of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, as told through Howard's own writing and interviews from personal friend Jack Real, business assistant Robert Mahue, wife Terry Moore and personal assistant George Francom.
    Thomas Jefferson by Ken Burns
This definitive film covers one of the most remarkable yet controversial men in American History.
