The AMERICAN SUMMER Documentary
Film Festival began in 2004 and because 2008 will
once again get us focused on elections, we will start
off with films that ask about our politicians: Are They
Heroes or Scoundrels?
On June 28 we will watch a young Arnold Schwarzenegger,
now the powerful Governor of California, in PUMPING
IRON and we will learn from this ambitious,
good looking, young immigrant how he focused his mind
and built up his body. We will see how he became a winner,
and was acknowledged as the world's champion muscle
man for five years in a row. We will also watch outtakes
and new footage in which Arnold admits taking steroids
and other "supplements" and confesses to telling
lies so the film would be more dramatic and bring in
enough money for him to buy a new car. Does his behavior
in this film change your opinion of him or change inspiration
that you felt watching his climb to power?
Charleen Swansea, Curator for AMERICAN SUMMER
