Vermicomposting is great way to compost if you have limited outdoor space or live in an apartment or condominium. Vermicomposting uses earthworms, usually red wigglers, to turn organic waste into high quality compost consisting of worm castings, uneaten bedding, and feedstock harvested from worm beds.
You can make your own Vermicomposting kit with the following list of supplies and tools or purchase a kit from a retailer:
Yes (yummy) | No (yuck) |
---|---|
Anything Green (especially the leafy stuff) | Citrus (no orange, lemon, or lime) |
Fruits | Fats, Oils & Salad Dressings |
Vegetables | Breads & Cereals |
Coffee Grounds & Filters | Salts (no seasoned food) |
Tea Bags | Meat |
Black & White Newspaper | Sugars (no processed food) |
Eggshells (crushed) | Garlic & Onions |
Orange County Solid Waste Management teaches public composting classes in the spring and fall. The classes teach the basics or indoor composting using worms, and outdoor composting using a variety of recipes and structures.
