After a nationwide search, the Town of Carrboro is pleased to announce the hiring of David (Dave) Schmidt as new Carrboro’s Fire Chief.
The announcement comes after a thorough and competitive national search that produced more than 70 applicants. “In addition to his 30 years of experience in firefighting and prevention, Dave brings an outstanding level of professionalism and leadership to the position,” said Carrboro Town Manager, David Andrews. “Dave’s subject matter knowledge and vision for the department lays out goals and action plans to provide residents of Carrboro with the highest level of service. I am confident he will lead our Fire Department forward into the new decade.”
Schmidt began his career in public service in 1989 at the Elgin Fire Department in Illinois where he was promoted through the ranks to the position of Fire Chief in 2016. Schmidt completed his Executive Fire Officer certification through the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, MD; completed the International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Executive Development Institute; and received Chief Fire Officer Certification from the Center for Public Safety Excellence and through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. He has been actively involved in developing an active shooter response plan with the Elgin Police Department and has performed extensive work in data analysis as well as Geographical Information System (GIS) as it relates to analysis of incident & apparatus data. He has also been appointed to the funeral committee, peer assessment committee and consulting services for the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and served as an Operations Section Chief on the State of Illinois Incident Management Team. In addition, Schmidt has completed training at the University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute and has a Certificate of Graduate Study in Public Management from Northern Illinois University.
