Carrboro Celebrates Bike Month
This May, the Town of Carrboro is celebrating Bike Month!
“I urge all Carrboro residents to have fun this month by riding a bike,” said Mayor Lydia Lavelle, who proclaimed Bike Month in Carrboro.
Established in 1956 and promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month has been celebrated in communities from coast to coast.
Open to everyone, the Town of Carrboro and community partners are planning events to encourage new riders by showcasing the many benefits of biking, such as enjoying the outdoors and using active transportation options to commute.
Thanks to our partners, including the Town of Chapel Hill, the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition, Orange County Commuter Options, and UNC Transportation and Parking.

Carrboro Engages with Immigrants through Virtual Community Listening Sessions
CARRBORO, N.C. -- As part of the Town’s ongoing comprehensive planning process, Carrboro Connects, community members from Myanmar participated in a listening session with Mayor Lydia Lavelle on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
The listening session aired live on the Refugee Community Partnership’s Bridge Builders Facebook page available at https://www.facebook.com/100048787422845/videos/304592711176974 The conversation, which was assisted through interpreters in Burmese and Karen languages, centered around topics of housing, transportation and jobs/economy.
Back in March, Carrboro Connects held a similar listening session with members from the Latino community. In this bilingual session, Mayor Lavelle and Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Foushee joined to hear ideas and concerns of residents. Common themes shared in both sessions are the desire for quality affordable housing, expanded transit service, workforce development, translated materials, jobs and services.

Mental Health Awareness Month in Carrboro
May is Mental Health Awareness Month in Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle.
“I ask all residents to support those who struggle with mental health challenges, to understand the resources that are available to those in need, and to encourage those in need to seek help, in order to achieve well-being for themselves as well as their friends, families, and community,” Mayor Lavelle said.
The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month is “You Are Not Alone” and using the time to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health, and acknowledging that it’s okay to not be okay; these connections and stories will be shared by the National Alliance on Mental Illness through their website www.nami.org.
The purpose of Mental Health Awareness Month is to raise awareness and educate the public about mental illnesses; to draw attention to suicide, which can be precipitated by some mental illnesses; and to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses.
