Carrboro, N.C. – On Sunday, April 7 at about 5 p.m., the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched to a natural gas leak in the area of 106 S. Greensboro St. near the intersection of W. Main Street. The leak was initially reported by an employee of Steel String Brewery.
Responding crews reported a strong odor of gas and immediately began evacuating nearby businesses. With the assistance of the Carrboro Police Department, four businesses in the area were evacuated due to elevated gas readings in the area. The 100 block of S. Greensboro Street through the 100 block of W Main Street were closed due to the proximity to the leak. Dominion Energy was requested to the scene to assist. The gas in the area was secured, and all businesses were reopened by approximately 6 p.m. The roadways were reopened by 6:30 p.m.
There were no injuries reported.
Dominion Energy is working with area businesses to determine the cause of the leak.
The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department received assistance from the Carrboro Police Department, Chapel Hill Fire Department and the Chapel Hill Police Department.
