Unfortunately, the Halloween Prize Pick-Up scheduled Friday evening at Carrboro Town Hall tonight has been canceled. However, we are pleased to be able to offer a virtual ‘Stories Under the Stars’ event featuring spooky, family-friendly stories.
Stories Under the Stars
The Carrboro Recreation, Parks & Cultural Resources Department and Weaver Street Market present ‘Stories Under the Stars’ at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Grab a blanket, hot chocolate, cider and a few cookies -- and sit back and enjoy some family-friendly spooky tales with storyteller Brian Sturm.
This program will be available via the Carrboro Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/carrbororec) and the Town of Carrboro YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/CarrboroNC). For those who cannot make it, the presentation will remain accessible on those platforms.
Virtual Contest Winners

Thank you to all who participated in our Virtual Costume Contest. All the entries were wonderful, and we appreciate your participation. This year’s winner in our 0-3 age group is Lawrence dressed as “chicken” like he enjoys seeing in downtown Carrboro. In our 4-5 age group, we have Avery as a “Witch." Sullivan is dressed as a ”Christmas Rockette” for our 6-10 age group. In our 11-14 age group Kyran is dressed as “Purple Rain” and for the Family/Group category we have Linda, Emily and Chris as “Space X Falcon Rocket, Bob, Douga and Sparkly Dinosaur."
Voting Information
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. North Carolina allows any voter to request a ballot by mail. You can also vote in person during early voting and on Election Day.

Orange County residents may choose to vote at any one of six early voting sites offered in the county, including Carrboro Town Hall at 301 W. Main St.
- Weekdays ― 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Saturdays ― 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sundays ― noon to 5 p.m.
Public Transportation Options for a Ride to the Polls
Need a ride to the polls? Chapel Hill Transit and Orange County Transportation Services have you covered.

Carrboro Awards $100,000 for Affordable Housing
This week, the Carrboro Town Council granted Habitat for Humanity of Orange County $100,000 from its Affordable Housing Special Revenue Fund in support of the construction of four new units (two duplexes) on Cobb Street in the Northside neighborhood. These homes will be energy-efficient and affordable to households earning between 30-80% of the area median income. The two ground-floor units will be built ADA-compliant for seniors or persons with disabilities.
On Nov. 2, Habitat for Humanity will begin accepting applications for homeownership. If you are interested in homeownership, send an email to applications@orangehabitat.org or call 919-932-7077. Applications close Nov. 20, 2020.
Town of Carrboro Receives Financial Reporting Award
The Town of Carrboro has received an award for exceptional financial reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
The award is the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019.
The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 21,000 members and the communities they serve.

COVID-19 Testing Offered Daily
Orange County Health Department is offering daily weekday COVID-19 testing in Hillsborough.
The testing will be offered 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the parking lot in front of the Whitted Human Services Center, 300 W. Tryon St. No testing will be offered at the site on Election Day, Nov. 3. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done online.
Regular testing events offered in the county are:
- Daily ― 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Whitted Human Services Center in Hillsborough.
- Every Wednesday ― Alternating each Wednesday between two sites in Chapel Hill: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the R-7 Parking Lot, 725 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. or 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nash Parking Lot on Wilson Street. See the county’s COVID-19 Testing page for each week’s location.
- Third Saturday of each month ― 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1701 Jimmy Ed Road in Hurdle Mills.
- Fourth Saturday of each month ― noon to 4 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St. in Chapel Hill.

- Who: Hosted by the Carrboro Tourism Development Authority (CTDA), open to the public, and featuring remarks from more than a dozen local leaders including Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle, CTDA Chair Donald Strickland of Atma Hotel Group, and CTDA Member Dan Mayer of The ArtsCenter.
- Why: The primary purpose of this forum is to introduce the new Visit Carrboro assets (website, photographs, videos, social media hashtag, and itineraries). The secondary purpose is to engage leaders in tourism and the local economy in a discussion about why tourism matters, the state of tourism and the covid-economy, and how we can build more momentum for safe tourism in Carrboro in the coming months and years.

And we can’t do this without hearing and learning from all our residents, organizations, businesses and other stakeholders. The comprehensive plan will become our Town’s guide for reaching and realizing our vision and goals over the next 20 years or more.

203 Project Updates
Earlier this month, the Town Council held a public hearing to receive public comment on the 203 South Greensboro Project as it proceeds with the development of a schematic design.
The Town continues to offer information about The 203 Project, which includes department programming space, the Orange County Southern Branch Library, WCOM and more.
Yard Waste and Loose Leaf Collection
Yard waste and loose leaves are collected year-round on Mondays. Residents from Hillsborough Road, Greensboro Street, Hanna Street, and points south will have yard waste collection on the first and third Monday of each month. All points north of Hillsborough Road, Greensboro Street and Hanna Street have yard waste collection on the second and fourth Monday of the month.
Yard waste (branches, grass, leaves, shrubbery, trimmings, and weeds) may either be placed in 95-gallon water-tight roll-out yard waste container or raked in a pile curbside for collection. No plastic or paper bags are allowed. Do not place yard waste in drainage ditch, sidewalk, bike lane, or in street. Yard waste containers may be purchased at Carrboro Town Hall.
