The NCDOT resurfacing project for East Main Street and West Franklin Street is underway; Carolina Sunrock is the project contractor.
As of Friday, July 22, all paving and installation of temporary paint pavement markings has been completed throughout the Carrboro portion of the project-- East Main Street from Jones Ferry Road to the Carrboro-Chapel Hill town limits at Merritt Mill Road and Rosemary Street. The project includes changing the street cross section along the 300 block of East Main Street from four travel lanes (two in each direction), to three travel lanes, (one in each direction and a center turn lane) and adds new bike lanes. Paving work in Chapel Hill will continue Sunday night at 8 p.m. along Franklin Street eastbound (right lane) and the crew will begin paving westbound (right lane) mid-shift Sunday night. Additional “New Traffic Pattern” signs have been installed throughout the route including Rosemary Street. The temporary pavement markings are being installed as paving progresses to continue to provide necessary guidance for motorists. To limit disturbance on local businesses and traffic, work will occur at night 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. - Sunday through Wednesday, Thursday 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.. No work to occur after 6 a.m. on Friday or any time on Saturday.
Traffic and signal patterns will change in some areas. Drivers should use caution and stay alert. Sidewalks should remain open.
